Quality Assurance Program

Quality and cost/performance goals are planned into products from the initial stages where functionality and manufacturability are painstakingly analyzed, and are constantly stressed throughout the development process. Care is taken to view products from the customers' perspective. In fact many products in this catalog were directly influenced by their customers.

The initial concept takes form in Design Engineering. System design tolerances are well within all component specifications, and individual parts are designed to operate at low stress levels. Each product is subjected to an extensive environmental testing phase simulating industrial plant conditions: thermal tests, mechanical shock, and vibration.

All raw materials are purchased to the rigid standards maintained by Frost Controls, Inc. Electronic components are pre-tested and supplied by qualified manufacturers with established reputations for quality. Other parts may be either pre-selected or custom manufactured to specifications controlled by Frost Controls, Inc.

Incoming inspection assures that materials meet specifications, upon passing inspection key components are rerouted to the cycle test area. LEDs and photo- receivers go through 30 million on/off cycles to eliminate marginal components. After cycle testing, LEDs and photo-receivers are subject to a heat degradation test, then back to the cycle test. Their values are electronically recorded and components in non-compliance of their high standards are automatically removed. All tests are in addition to the manufactures test.

Sensors are assembled, by automatic equipment, into lens subassemblies and maximized for optical and electrical characteristics. Each printed circuit board is functionally tested by custom designed microcomputer test equipment that compares each one to a master program. Arrays, as subassemblies, are given a variable rate test, a functionality test and a common reference test. All test data is logged and filed to be reviewed.

Complete systems are burned-in for 24 hours. A QC inspector evaluates the burn-in data and releases a system to shipping only if it meets specification. Final inspection catches any cosmetic faults.

Systems are shipped in custom fitted corrugated material encased in its custom shipping carton. The package is rated to withstand a free fall without sustaining damage to the system.

When products are returned for repair, regardless of how long they were in service, a report of goods returned containing a detailed description of the problem is sent to the VP of Operations and CEO. Returned goods reports are kept in a database and analyzed for possible trends that may lead to product improvements.
